Overview:

Your UNT System HR Benefits team provides you a comprehensive introduction to benefits via New Hire Benefits Orientation, held every  Tuesday via Teams (10am-11:30am) or you can attend in person at BSC workspaces: Woodhill Building 4 (1112 Dallas Dr., Denton, Texas 76205).  To join virtually: Click here to join the meeting  Your offer letter should include your orientation date, as well.  If you're a new salaried benefits-eligible staff, faculty or graduate-student employee, we strongly encourage you to attend new hire benefits orientation, in addition to your campus’ new employee orientation, which provides you with campus-specific information regarding your campus life and culture.  During benefits orientation, you will be provided important information on all benefits including insurance, retirement and leave. Benefits enrollment is time sensitive.  Attending orientation ensures you receive information and answers to your questions that you'll need to make your benefit elections by the deadline(s).  We'll also answer questions on how to complete enrollment and help troubleshoot issues. We also encourage you to explore our website and bookmark it as a continued resource.

Important: you will receive a Welcome to Benefits email from your HR Benefits team on your first date of hire.  It includes important information about enrolling in your benefits, including a step-by-step guide on how to register your account with the Employee Retirement System of Texas (ERS) and elect your benefits.  This email may be sent to the personal email address you used when applying for your job.  Your benefits advisors will also mention this email in orientation and ensure you have received it - you need the information contained in the email to enroll.

We strive to be a valued strategic partner in helping create an environment that fosters engagement by serving people, empowering teams, and transforming lives.

New Employee Enrollment Deadlines:

Insurance – During your first 30 days of employment or promotion into a benefits-eligible position you have the opportunity to enroll in optional coverage such as dental, vision, life insurance, disability, and TexFlex via the ERS portal If you don't enroll by the deadline, you will have to wait until the annual Summer Enrollment period to elect optional coverages (that will be effective 9/1, following the Summer Enrollment period).

Medical coverage begins the first of the month after the 60th day of employment.  If your 60th day falls in the middle of the month coverage will begin on the 1st month after your 60th day. Visit the ERS portal to enroll in benefits.  Full-time benefits-eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the HealthSelect of Texas health coverage (employee only) administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield.  To add dependents to the coverage or choose the Consumer Directed Health Select plan, you must log in to the portal during your 60 day enrollment period and complete those changes.  You may waive the coverage during the 60 day period, as well.

These ERS-administered deadlines for enrollment are not flexible - so please be aware of the time sensitive nature of the enrollment period and be sure to attend a New Hire Benefits Orientation session so that you don't miss out on these great employee benefits!

Resources

Mandatory Retirement Plans

Employees in a salaried non-student, benefits-eligible position who work at least half-time (50% FTE, or 20 hours a week) are required to participate in a retirement plan while employed.  Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the Teacher Retirement System (TRS) plan.  TRS is a defined benefit plan. Some employees (generally full-time faculty, librarians, coaches, general counsel, and other administrators) are able to waive the TRS and enroll in the Optional Retirement Program.  Visit our Retirement Plans page for more detailed information on retirement plans.  These plans are discussed in detail at New Hire Benefits Orientation.

Wellbeing

The benefits department of human resources offers a well-being program which provides a myriad of resources for employees that can enhance their physical, interpersonal, and financial health.  Visit our Well-Being page to view the exciting programs available to you.
