Dr. Walters heads incredibly important work as the Steering Committee Chair of the landmark HEALing Communities Study to stem the opioid crisis that has gripped significant portions of the country. The $350 million study is the largest investment by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SMHSA) to address this national travesty. A native of San Diego, he misses the smell of the ocean, but digs the Picasso-at-lunch location of the HSC. When he's not working to eradicate opioid abuse, you might find him perfecting a headstand, looking for a new home DIY project or tuning into his favorite late-night host to stave off the pandemic blues. Read on and get to know Dr. Walters.
What is your favorite aspect about your job?
I love the location of the HSC in Fort Worth's Museum District. I like being able to walk to a nice restaurant and look at a Picasso painting, all during my lunch hour.
What employee benefit or activity would you like to see added to UNT World?
Mobile car wash; shoeshine; chair massage.
What is your proudest work moment?
I love hearing stories about lives saved through the work we’re doing with the HEALing Communities Study. The study is a cooperative agreement supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) with the goal of reducing opioid deaths by at least 40-% over a three-year period in nearly 70 communities hard-hit by the opioid crisis across Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York and Ohio.
What is your proudest non-work moment?
Painting something, writing a poem or fixing something around the house that I’ve never done before.
What is a fact about you that may surprise your work colleagues?
I enjoy doing hot yoga, though I never seem to get any better at it. My goal for the last three years has been to do a headstand.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE...
TV show?: I have watched, in their entirety, more than once: Bosch, Better Call Saul, Arrested Development and 30 Rock.
Celebrity?: The Late Show with Stephen Colbert kept me sane during the pandemic. I love it when he “nerds out” with a Lord of the Rings reference during his monologue.
Place to visit?: A beach anywhere. I grew up in San Diego and miss the smell of the ocean.
