How is Engagement Measured?
In order to improve engagement, it must first be measured. This provides you with a framework to act upon. The 12 elements of engagement give you a point of focus on 12 actionable workplace elements with proven links to performance outcomes. Organizations can create high engagement levels over time by continuously focusing on these 12 workplace needs.
The Survey's Q12
Gallup’s research shows that the order of the Q12 items is important. Each of the 12 items represent the four stages of a hierarchy that an employee goes through on the path of engagement.
|HOW CAN I GROW?||Q12. This last year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow.
Q11. In the last six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress.
|The most advanced dimension, where team members want to make improvements, learn, grow, innovate, and apply their new ideas.|
|DO I BELONG?||Q10. I have a best friend at work.
Q09. My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work.
Q08. The mission or purpose of my institution makes me feel my job is important.
Q07. At work, my opinions seem to count.
|This third dimension is where team members evaluate their connection to the team and organization.|
|WHAT DO I GIVE?||Q06. There is someone at work who encourages my development.
Q05. My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.
Q04. In the last seven days, I have received recognition or praise for doing good work.
Q03. At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.
|The second level continues to build a foundation for engagement, where team members consider how others view and value their efforts.|
|WHAT DO I GET?||Q02. I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right.
Q01. I know what is expected of me at work.
|These two items are the foundation for building engagement and must be met first.|
